First Fall Snow on the Santa Rosa Mountains, Northern Nevada

Our latest road trip took us south through eastern Oregon and into northern Nevada.  Here we were lucky enough to see fresh snow — the first of the year — on the Santa Rosa chain.  It’s a beautiful mountain range and was especially memorable with its coat of fresh snow.

The Santa Rosas are within Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and include peaks reaching to almost 10,000 ft/3,000 meters.  The rugged range extends north-to-south for approximately 75 miles (120 km) from the Oregon border.

The range was named for the wild roses which grow in the area.  It’s an important habitat for wildlife, including bighorn sheep, mule deer, cougars, a variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians.
