Amsterdam tackling Rome’s trash

Rome has found at least a partial solution for its notorious overflowing trash problem—shipping it to Amsterdam.

Dutch waste company AEB has a new contract with Rome authorities to process 800,000 tons of trash a week. AEB burns the trash to provide power for district heating plans in the Netherlands. A company spokesman told press that ’This will benefit the environment more than to leave it in a landfill in Rome, even taking the transport into account.’

The mountains of trash are being baled at the southern end of the trek, placed on trains and delivered directly to AEB, which also handles trash from Britain, Belgium, Germany, Iceland and France. Rome plans a new incinerator of its own, to be ready in about three years; until then they will be paying €180,000 a week to AEB.
