I have done road trips down all of the rivers listed above except the Volga and Douro.  The favorite of both my wife and I was the Moselle with its steep valley and gorgeous scenery.  A few of my photos.

I have never done a long Rhine cruise – only short bits and pieces – but I expect it would be a very pleasant thing to do. You won’t get to Regensburg, though – it is nice, but lies on the Danube. Nuremberg would also not be on the itinerary of a typical Rhine cruise – it lies well to the east – although I believe it’s doable via the Main-Danube canal (which could be quite an attractive option in itself).
