Cafe el Diario, Madrid

After a day spent exploring the fine art collection of the Prado Museum, we wandered the neighborhood to the west of the museum and came across a number of small cafes and tapas bars.  Here are a few of them:

Spaniards eat dinner very late — around 10 to 11 pm — much too late for us who enjoy dinner around 6 or so.  Our habit was to eat a meal of tapas plates in lieu of formal dinner, a practice we found enjoyable and satisfying.  This day we decided to try the tapas at El Diario.

The interior of the cafe was pleasing and typical of the better tapas bars.

The menu was extensive, a sample shown below.  We picked two raciones (tapas plates) from the menu.  Our waiter didn’t speak English, but our Spanish was adequate to place an order.

We enjoyed a meal of shrimp (gambas), excellent roasted padron peppers, olives and fresh bread.
