Rotterdam gets a drive-thru museum

Two Rotterdam institutions have formed a marriage of convenience to give both a new role during the pandemic: The huge and empty Rotterdam Ahoy exhibit halls have now become a drive-in gallery for the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum.

The museum, which has been shut since last year for a multi-year building program, opened the drive-thru exhbits August 1 in space that usually hosts huge events such as the Eurovision Song Contest. Artworks projected in the display range from medieval to contemporary.

The exhibit area, twice the size of a soccer field, is only open to electric cars because of ventilation issues. For those who don’t have one, several are available for use on-site, and for those who don’t drive, there are drivers. Up to 750 cars can visit each day.
