Pails and Beehives, Manitoba

There are lots of beehives on the prairies because there are many wildflowers and fields of clover.  I was a little perplexed when I saw these hives north of Dauphin because each has an upside-down pail on it.  I know that’s not how you harvest honey, but I didn’t know exactly why these pails were there.

A beekeeper later informed me that early in the season they put solidified honey from the past year on each hive to provide food energy for the bees until enough blossoms have opened for the hive to collect its own nourishment.
