5 Common Camping Mistakes to Avoid

(content by Darren W)

Holidays are meant for us to spend quality time with our loved ones. Camping has grown in popularity over the past couple of years as it offers room for bonding, not only with other people but also with Mother Nature. Although this sounds like an idyllic moment, things might sometimes go contrary to what you were expecting at first.

Accidents might happen at any time if you go unprepared, not to mention a whole awful experience if you fail to avoid certain mistakes.

Whether you are a seasoned or just a beginner camper, we have compiled a list of the five common mistakes people make camping, and practical methods to avoid them. These tips are simple, and you if follow them to the latter, your camping experience becomes one to always look forward every holiday.

1) Tent status

The tent is the most crucial factor to look into before planning any camping sessions. Having the wrong one can become a dampener to your vacation. As you purchase the tent, ensure that you have seen it being assembled and that you and (or) whoever you are sharing it with can fully fit inside without a problem. This enables you to avoid spending too much on something which can either be too big or too small for your needs.

Moreover, avoid going for cheaper model tents as they will always have something that can ruin your experience. Understandably, you may not wish to break the bank because of a product you may not need numerous times that year, but rest assured, they might ruin your time. They can either break down, leak, allowing too much heat or cold inside, etc. You can ask around for better-quality, inexpensive tents to use for your next camping session.

2) Leaving food and rubbish unattended to

Whenever you have any food leftovers or rubbish, do not leave them unattended. You should leave the site in the condition you left it in. Clean camping environments such as the Great Lake Taupo Holiday Park are always kept in pristine condition.

Should you leave any litter lying around, you might invite unwanted animals and bugs, which will not only be a big bother to you only but also to other campers. Always pack your leftover food and litter and dispose of them in designated regions.

3) Not enough light

You might all have flashlights on your phones, but this is never enough light to use when camping. You should always carry an extra source of light that can take you throughout the night without having to worry about it going off any time soon. Head torches and lanterns are great options to consider.

4) Cooking mistakes

If you happen to go to a camping site which permits you to cook, you should not cook inside the tents, regardless of the situation outside. Doing so can lead to condensation, and in other cases, the tents might catch fire. If the tent is enclosed and you happen to cook inside, you might also suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning. Always cook outside and remember to pack ingredients that do not require refrigeration.

5) Overpacking

You don’t have to carry along every gadget, outfit, and other items when going out camping. Only take those which are important and leave alone those that you may go without. Some sites such as Great Lake Taupo Holiday Park have places you can purchase some other stuff you might require when on your vacation, so you don’t have to pack too much.
