The Danish government will pay about $1.6 million to buy Denmark’s last four circus elephants and retire them to a zoo. It’s part of a move that will soon end all animal performances in circuses.
Many countries around the world, and especially in Europe, have placed limits on having wild animals in circuses and even zoos, and some have banned them altogether. In Denmark, circuses are presently limited to sea lions, elephants and zebras. The government is planning a new anti-cruelty law that will impose a blanket ban on all animals.
So far, there’s no decision on where Ramboline, Lara, Djunga and Jenny will live out their days; the ministory of food, agriculture and fisheries statement said only that “The elephants will be sent to the establishment that can offer them the highest level of well-being.”
