Add Dublin and Shannon in Ireland to the airports where U.S. Customs and Border Protection are using facial recognition technology to pre-clear passengers traveling to the U.S.
The system takes much less time than manually checking documents, and works by comparing the traveler’s facial characteristics with the photo in the passenger’s passport photo or other document. If there’s no match, a manual check goes ahead.
The two Irish airports are the first in Europe to use the technology for clearing U.S.-bound passengers. Pre-clearance stations in Abu Dhabi in the Gulf and Aruba in the Caribbean also use the new system, and it will be rolled out eventually to all pre-clearance stations.
