Marriott, Alaska Airlines top loyalty program ranks

Marriott topped the hotels, and Alaska Airlines the airlines as U.S. News & World Report released its annual ratings of major loyalty programs.

The magazine uses a variety of standards in its judgments, including ease of earning points, amenities, member access to discounts, and the ease or difficulty in using points to book rooms or tickets.

Marriott got good marks for its complimentary Wi-Fi access and the ability to use points to book sporting events and concerts as well as rooms. Wyndham, which placed second, was noted for ease in earning a free night and for access to room discounts.

Alaska was the top airline for the third year in a row. It continues to use a point-per-mile structure that makes it possible for economy fliers to earn miles faster than in competitors points-per-dollar schemes. Delta took second place, moving up on increased inventory of award seats, and other opportunities to spend points for hotels, upgrades and more.
