Carnival stirs up a swimming-pool tempest

Carnival Cruises has disturbed the serenity of its adults-only Serenity Deck areas with a controversial move to open the spaces to families as well.

The Serenity Deck usually includes a pool and sometimes hot tubs set aside for those who’d rather not deal with children at the moment—someone else’s or their own.

A Carnival spokesperson told Cruise Critic that “This change was made based on the high volume of families onboard at this time of year, although we very much appreciate the view of those who like having an adults-only pool option.” She said the line is evaluating a future plan, and will make announcements soon.

On the Cruise Critic forums, the issue has drawn a lot of traffic, with most opposed to the change, although some expressed sentiments similar to this one: “These spaces are too public to effectively restrict kids from entering. If an adult only pool makes or breaks your vacation, it may be time to consider someone else. Carnival is a family line, it is going to cater to families.”
