Boeing’s biggest Dreamliner takes off

The Boeing 787-10, third and largest version of the Dreamliner series, had its maiden flight last week, moving it another step toward next year’s debut in airline service with Singapore Airlines.

The ‘Dash 10’ is essentially an 18-foot stretch of the 787-9, which in turn was a 20-foot stretch of the original 787-8. The longer fuselage means, obviously, more seats. At 330 seats, it will carry about 40 more passengers than the -9. There’s a cost to that, though: the 787-10 will have a range of about 6430 nautical miles, compared to about 7600 for the -9.

Singapore plans to use the  plane on high-volume medium-haul routes and other carriers will likely do that, also. Boeing has 149 orders for the -10 so far, and is building them all at its Charleston, SC plant. Deliveries will start after completion of required safety testing.

I think it will also become a popular plane.  But the loss of range is substantial.

Time Boeing stops stretching and brings out the 797.
