Rome restaurants: 25% fail health inspection

Troubling times ahead for Rome’s restaurant industry, as inspectors found irregularities at half the restaurants inspected, and conditions serious enough to threaten closure at nearly 25%.

According to Il Corriere, the daily newspaper, 727 inspections by NAS, the Italian health police, has resulted in 33 criminal investigations and another 300 cases referred to local health officials. Most of the inspections took place in tourist-heavy central Rome. Fines totaling €658,000 were levied on 521 summonses.

Many of the violations were for outdated food and food stored at improper temperatures, but others were cited for rodent and insect infestations, including one restaurant where roaches had made themselves at home in the cash register.
