SAS pilots on verge of major strike

Pilots for SAS, the Scandinavian flag carrier, are threatening to strike in the next few days over unresolved contract issues, adding more uncertainty to Europe’s skies.

With changing economics in the airline industry, there have been many such issues for the “mainline” carriers such as SAS, Lufthansa and more, who have been pressing their unions for concession to compete with the budget carriers such as Ryanair, Easyjet and Norwegian. In this instance, one sticking point is vacation schedules.

A mediator is working with the two sides, but it is possible that over 400 Norwegian SAS pilots may walk today; if they do, they are likely to be followed within a day by a similar number of Swedish pilots. It is believed that the Danish pilots (the airline is 50% owned by the three governments) are less likely to walk out.

Any walkout would seriously disrupt the airlines’ schedules, and possibly close Oslo’s airport altogether. More from TheLocal.dk HERE
