It used to be nations that built empires of colonies, but now, apparently, it’s cruise lines. MSC, which already has a private island in the Bahamas for its passengers, is now developing a second one in Abu Dhabi.
They’re not alone: In recent years, Disney, Royal Caribbean and Princess have all bought or leased private territories for their passengers in various parts of the Caribbean. Mostly they are equipped with beaches, bars and spas, and sometimes concessionaire shops. It’s sort of an extension of the ship that looks like land, but isn’t really “anywhere.”
