Berlin: Ooops again! This time it’s a hotel, not the airport

If that’s a puzzling headline, you may have missed Gumbo’s chronicle of the continuing troubles Berlin is having getting its new airport built. This time, though, a new hotel is falling into the U2 subway tunnel beneath it.

Work on the hotel, on Grunerstrasse near Alexanderplatz, has been stopped while engineers work out a solution. The construction had been expected to shift the roof of the subway tunnel by .8 centimetres, but with construction only partly completed the tunnel has already lost over 6 cm, and trains are forced to slow down to 15km/h in the section, causing delays down the line.

The 19-story €100 hotel is to be the largest in the Motel One chain, and was scheduled to open in 2017. No certainty yet on what will happen, and when or whether construction will resume.
