 Young Pelicans, Brooks, Alberta

Being among the largest birds of the world, pelicans can grow to a weight of 5-8 kg and a wingspan of 3 meters.  Some of them came to Alberta for nesting.  According the records, the most northerly pelican colony in the world was spotted on an island in Mountain Rapids in the Slave River.

Young pelicans grow fast in the comfortable Alberta summer weather and leave by late September, before the freezing weather comes.  They usually travel to the south and spend their winter near the Gulf of Mexico, enjoying the warm weather like many Canadians do.
