New competitor for TomTom, Garmin and Google Maps

There’s a new GPS app asking for attention. Scout, from skobbler, a subsidiary of map supplier Telenav, is free like Google, and offers offline functions like the dedicated GPS boxes.

The free version provides online use and offline use for one country of your choice. If you need more maps, they can be bought singly, or for $10.99 you can have the world. Offline maps are important—last summer in Provence we found ourselves occasionally with no signal to allow Google to guide us. And offline saves on data use, too.

The free version includes basic traffic info; there’s premium real-time traffic also. For $14.99 one-time charge, you get all the offline maps and the traffic. Here’s a REVIEW and some more information.
