$120 omelette: In Bangkok, it’s a crime

Even a Michelin star may not be enough to keep Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta out of jail if Bangkok inspectors throw the book at her after a public complaint by a man who was charged 4000 Bhat, or about $120 for a crabmeat omelette that he says was shown on the menu at a price equal to about $45, which is bad enough.

Junsuta, who got her Michelin star in 2017 and has kept it since, already paid a 2,000 Bhat fine to officials who visited the restaurant, based on the menu discrepancy. But, now they are going further and investigating the cost of ingredients used at the restaurant to see if they support the prices being charged to customers.

Officials said that overcharging carries a possible jail term of up to seven years and/or a fine up to 140,000 Bhat.
