Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, May 3, 2014: Metropole Hotel, Hanoi
22 April 2014. A British woman has been arrested and is facing deportation in Sri Lanka over a Buddha tattoo on her arm. Naomi Michelle Coleman, 37, was taken into custody at the airport in Colombo, after she arrived from India. Ms Coleman, who has a tattoo of a Buddha seated on a lotus flower on her right arm, was arrested for ‘hurting others' religious feelings,’ a police spokesman said. Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, May 3, 2014: Metropole Hotel, Hanoi
That's an interesting link, GarryRF, because Sri Lankans tend to be pretty mellow about most things. Still, being disrespectful (or perceived as disrespectful) to Buddha is frowned on and not tolerated by the Sinhalese majority. As many know, it is considered very disrespectful to show too much skin in a Buddhist temple or shrine (no bare shoulders or legs). You won't be allowed admittance to the shrine unless you cover yourself. I believe this woman offended these customs. But this POD is...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, January 19, 2015: Tango Goemba Monastery, Bhutan
I was surprised to find the teachings of Buddha in my hotel bedroom bedside draw.. During a tropical rainstorm I was stuck in my room for a few hours. What a fascinating read it was ! Never had time to finish it. Had to buy a copy when I got home. My favourite quote was: "Man who commits adultery likes licking jam off a sharp knife"

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#120)
After having a look around, I've come to the conclusion this morning that there are more statues of herself (HRR-self ?) than any other human on the planet. Well, maybe more of the Buddha, but maybe not.

Re: Gal Vihara, Sri Lanka
You mentioned Gal Vihara was commissioned by King Parakramabahu I (1153 - 1186 A.D), who also built Polonnaruwa's Great Palace Complex and the Vatadage (where the sacred Buddha Tooth Relic was kept). Is there a record of the names of the master stone carvers or the one who actually built / architect the Great Palace Complex?

Re: Gal Vihara, Sri Lanka
Something I've also thought about, George. And no, the credit goes to the big boss and not the people who actually do the work. So far as I know none of these crafts men -- and there must have been dozens on this project -- are known anymore.

The photos are amazing. It's a little hard to tell scale in a photograph. I'm curious how big the first Buddha is?Thanks again for sharing .

Re: Buddhas of Bagan
Rob, you can kind of tell from the angle of the picture. Buddha is set up on a dais so my head was about even with his feet. So, in a word, big.

It's an amazing place, Mac. I've visited it four times and would go back the next time as well. Your photos do it great justice. They only thing they don't capture is the heat and humidity!

Well thank you, esteemed Gurus! It is just SO photogenic and almost surreal in its beauty and exotic creatures. A continual "trip" to experience. And how do you ever truly capture the "essence" of the temple.... Just keep trying I guess....

Re: Sequoia National Park: Hiking to Pear Lake (The Lakes Trail)
You get closer each time to getting me into non-urban hiking...but how difficult is a hike like this for someone used to that kind of distance, but in (sometimes hilly) cities, but not to much off-path hiking?

Re: Sequoia National Park: Hiking to Pear Lake (The Lakes Trail)
The challenge of this particular trail is getting up to the lakes. Once there, the trail is not that hard, although rocky so you have to watch your footing. There are easier places to get into the subalpine zone of some great mountains, PHeymont. Both in California and in the Rockies. When you're ready, we'll pick one and head out there. Likely for a day hike. My knees don't like the weight of a full backpack anymore.

Re: Sequoia National Park: Hiking to Pear Lake (The Lakes Trail)
My knees are part of my concern; they love walking (helps them!) but don't do well twisted or weighted. Have you any suggestions for the Hudson Valley/Lower Catskills area?

Re: Sequoia National Park: Hiking to Pear Lake (The Lakes Trail)
I've never hiked in the Catskills, though would like to some day. My suggestion: 1) Go to your local library. They definitely will have hiking books on areas of interest (or request them in advance so they can be delivered from other branches). Check out some trails that are convenient and look doable. Most hiking books give great details. 2) If you find a great book, it's worth buying to have as a reference at home and take with you on the trail. For example, though I haven't read it, this...
