Where in the World is Travelgumbo? (#111)

We know Gumbo is a fan of civilization, enjoying art, architecture, fine food and cultural experiences.  But Gumbo also deeply loves the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.

This week's puzzle finds us away from large cities and in a fairly remote place, though with a village nearby.  While going for a walk, Gumbo discovers this cute creature hiding under the branches of a bush.  This week's puzzle is a two parter.  1) What is the animal Gumbo is looking at? and 2) Where in the World is Gumbo?

Hi Jack.  No, it's not a nutria.  But Jill was right in identifying it as a marsupial.  Question is, what type?

Time for today's clue.  This time centered on the land area in question.

Here are a few views of what this place looks like. The bodies of water in the center of both photos are salty lagoons.
