Rome roadwork turns up new history

Pipeline excavations in Rome's Via Alfonso Lamora last week turned up an unexpected prize: a nearly complete 2000-year-old room with its plaster and frescoes intact. At first, when workers removed chunks of earth from under the road and found an open space, they suspected a cave and called spelunkers to investigate, but the cave experts quickly realized they were in someone's once-luxurious living room.

The excavation area was once a neighborood of luxurious villas surrounding the Horti Lamiani, a garden area belonging to the Emperors. For more information on the find, click HERE for TheLocal.it

Doing roadwork in Rome turns up archaeological finds about half the time, according to government archaeologists, but "finding a room under the street is rare," according to Mirella Serlorenzi, the archaeologist in charge told TheLocal.it

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
