Primera thinks it's found a niche

With all the competition for trans-Atlantic passengers, pitting discounters against legacy airlines and discounters against each other, you'd think there's not that much room for more—but Primera thinks it's found a new sweet spot.

The airline, which is headquartered in Latvia, registered in Iceland and is flying on a Danish operating license, has launched flights to North America from London Stansted, from where no other airline flies the Atlantic. Destinations for now include New York, Toronto and Washington, with more planned.

At Stansted, well northeast of London, Primera is not only looking not to compete with other discounters at Gatwick and Heathrow, but also to develop air traffic from the area around it, attracting passengers who would have to either cross London or go a long way around for Gatwick or Heathrow.

Unlike competitor Norwegian, which has relied heavily on 787s and is now adding the 737 MAX, Primera has a mixed fleet of various models of 737, and one A321neo, with five more scheduled for delivery this year, along with 2 A321LR long-range models, for which it is the launch customer. By 2021, it hopes to have 40 planes, and enough passengers to fill them.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
