Panmure Island Lighthouse, Prince Edward Island

The octagonal shaped Panmure Island Lighthouse, built in 1853, is the oldest wooden lighthouse on Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada.

The early lighthouses on PEI failed because they were made from the Island's soft sandstone. They started building them out of wood from the forests. The wooden lighthouses were built by men skilled in shipbuilding. Panmure Island Lighthouse uses tree nails and bolts to make it strong.
