November 23, 2017: Red Mosque, Colombo

The Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque ('Red Mosque') is a distinctive red and white historic building in the Pettah neighborhood of Colombo.  It's one of the oldest mosques in Colombo and a popular tourist site.  Pettah is a working-class, multi-ethnic, multi-religious neighborhood.

Construction of the Red Mosque was completed in 1909.  The mosque's design is a hybrid style of architecture with elements Indo-Islamic and Indian architecture, with Neo-Classical styles.  It has recently been expanded to enable up to 10,000 worshippers.
