Is there a travel buff on your gift list?

What to buy your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers for Christmas isn’t always easy; unless they love to travel. There are dozens of gifts to give the active and armchair traveler. Here's a personal selection of my favorites!

Prevent overweight luggage going to a destination or on the return when the suitcase also contains souvenirs. Small, lightweight scales are easy to take along on any trip and make great stocking stuffers. www.lewisnclark.com

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes keep any suitcase or backpack organized by using one cube for undergarments, another for slacks and so forth. When living out of a suitcase—whether camping or flying abroad—it is easy to keep everything in order with packing cubes. This is a gift I have given several times.  Everyone loves them. www.lewisnclark.comwww.eaglecreek.comwww.ebags.com

While looking for a new carry-on, I came across Eagle Creek’s new ultra-light carry-on sized wheeled backpack that collapses and dissembles for easy storage in a small stuff sac. EC Lync System 22 offers the versatility of a backpack and carry-on; wheel it, roll it, wear it, stuff it—love it!! www.eaglecreek.com

Perfect Traveling Shoes

CMUK are lightweight, machine washable/dry-fast, fold nearly flat, vegan shoes that are as perfect for the city as they are for the beach or long walks. I wore them all over Chile from Santiago city streets to hiking on Easter Island, and on a recent Caribbean cruise. They are really comfortable shoes! www.cmukshoes.com

RFID Blocker Purse or Wallet

My daughter introduced me to the security of radio-frequency identification (RFID) blocking when she gave me a purse last Christmas. RFID is the wireless use of electromagnetic fields to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically stored information. RFID blocking technology helps protect your personal information, including credit cards and passports data, from being stolen by an RFID reader. Eagle Creek has a large selection of RFID blocker purses and wallets. www.eaglecreek.com

I have two favorite, but odd gifts...

One we give ourselves: U.S. tissues, such as Kleenex, are so expensive in pocket packs, and so thin that it takes two or three to safely blow your nose. So, every trip to Europe, we stop in a cheap supermarket and buy wonderful 3-ply tissues, mostly 10 or 12 packs to a package, for around €1-1.50 and bring them home. We've found similar tissues and prices wherever we go, and every winter cold or allergy season is now a memory of travel.

The other I keep for younger friends about to make their first trip to France; my wallet always has enough leftover t-tickets for the Paris Metro and bus system so I can put a few, sometimes with a ribbon, in the first package of maps, books and advice from our collection.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations

Some good gift ideas that fit almost every budget, Marilyn!

PHeymont -- you can buy those tissues at an American "Dollar Store" discounter for a fraction of the price you pay for the Kleenex brand name at Safeway.

For about 20 years I've been making a calendar of my favorite travel pictures of that year, which I give to friends, family and coworkers.  Seems almost quaint in this digital era, but people seem to enjoy sharing in my travels.
