Huge diamond makes Smithsonian debut

The largest gem-quality diamond ever found in North America is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, sharing a gallery with the Hope Diamond, the world's most famous jewel.

The 187-carat gem, named the Foxfire, was mined in Canada's Northwest Territories, near the North Pole in 2015. It will be on exhibit for 3 months.

The Foxfire is 4 times the size of the Hope Diamond, but of course it would lose a lot of weight if it were cut. But the diamond's owner, Deepak Sheth, plans to leave it uncut.

The Smithsonian is open 10 am to 5:30 pm, and admission is free. The diamond is on display in the Harry Winston Gallery until February 16th.
