Hawaiian Airlines, which has long had its eyes on planes that could let it add nonstops from European cities, may have made the magic choice after a couple of fumbles, ordering 10 Boeing 787-9 airliners, with an option for 10 more.
At the same time, the airline canceled its order for Airbus A330-800neos, which were in turn a replacement for a canceled order of A350s. Hawaiian, in addition to its many inter-island flights, also flies to other Pacific destinations, including Japan.
Although the airline and Boeing, in their press release, didn't specifically tab the Dreamliners, due to start arriving in 2021, for European routes, they will be the airline's first planes capable of such routes. Somewhat over a year ago, Hawaiian had publicly toyed with the idea of acquiring off-lease A380s for a similar project, but it didn't work out.
