Gourmet Japan, cooked on a bus

A Japanese tour operator has come up with a new wrinkle: an open-top sightseeing bus set up as a restaurant on top, with an on-board kitchen.

Willer Travel, which offers many English-speaking tours in Japan, has had a bus customized to seat 25 passengers and the kitchen below, with the dining area on top. So far, they're offering two itineraries which include sightseeing and the regional cuisine of the area being visited.

To keep the meals from being a complete mess, the tables have slip-free surfaces and cup holders, and use fancy-looking but disposable tableware and plates. So far, the two available itineraries are one to the Fukushima Lagoon, and another along the Sea of Japan to Sakata Dunes Lake. Prices are 15,200 yen, or about $138.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
