France's new rules: Old cars and bags out, Sunday hours in

France continues to roll out new laws, some 'simplifying' labor laws, and others affecting the environment and in particular, tourists.

A raft of new rules goes into effect July 1st, including:

  • Bag Ban: Single-use plastic bags are banned at stores; you'll either have to use paper or a re-usable plastic bag. Starting next January, only bio-degradable bags will be allowed.
  • Sunday Hours: Department stores and other large retailers that have been banned from Sunday sales will now be allowed to stay open in 12 designated "international tourist zones" in Paris, including the Champs-Elysees, Montmartre, Saint-Germain, Les Halles and more. Stores in those areas will also be allowed to stay open until midnight.
  • Breathe Easier: As part of Mayor Anne Hidalgo's war on the city's persistent smog, cars and motorcycles built before 1999 will be banned from the city from 8 am to 8 pm; they don't meet current pollution standards.
