Denmark's eagles are on the rise

Denmark's eagle population is growing and spreading, according to the Danish Ornithological Society (DOF), which conducted a national eagle count a few days ago. For the first time, the population topped the 400 mark.

For nearly a century, up to the start of its comeback in 1996, eagles had almost completely vanished from Denmark, as well as other areas. But the survey found 395 white-tailed eagles and 14 golden eagles as it counted.

The DOF's project leader said the group was surprised, especially given the weather conditions. Kim Skelmose told reporters that “During mild periods like this January the eagles and their prey are much more spread out than is the case during icy winters, when the birds of prey gather in fewer locations and are easy to spot and count...Therefore we did not expect that the count would result in a new record."

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
