Dec. 5, 2017: Jerash, Jordan

I have little idea of the importance and enormity of Jerash until I visit Jordan with Exodus Travels. The city itself claims an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years. What guests visiting the city usually focus on are the Roman ruins where I wander this autumn day.

Conquered by General Pompey in 63 BC, Jerash came under Roman rule. I am able to explore the remains of what is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Buried in sand for centuries, excavation and restoration began 70 years ago.

Walking along paved and colonnaded streets, I visit temples, colosseums, plazas and baths. I spend the better part of three hours wandering the site and taking photos. It is easy to get lost in the ruins; lost in thought; lost in history.
