'Alberghi diffusi'—secret hotels for tiny towns

A new form of hotel is becoming popular in a number of small Italian towns: Hotels that are nearly invisible because their rooms are scattered in houses and apartments around the town's streets, near an office or cafe that serves as 'reception.'

It's a way to draw travelers to towns that need the business (many of the hotels use spaces that had been abandoned) and to give travelers a very different view of life than could happen in larger cities.

A while back, TG had an article about an abandoned town that was being turned into a diffused hotel, but these are different: they are in the hearts of living towns. Some offer breakfast or a cafe, most expect visitors will eat in local taverns and restaurants.

The Guardian (UK) has a recent article by a staff writer who visited and stayed in a number of alberghi diffusi. For more about the hotels  and towns, and her experiences, click HERE
