737MAX makes its maiden flight

Boeing's first 737MAX completed its first flight today, following its first taxi tests, signalling the next step in getting it ready for airline service. Southwest Airlines will be the launch customer; the plane that flew today will be theirs in mid-2017.

There are already nearly 10,000 737s flying, but this new model, with extended body and new fuel-efficient engines, carries Boeing's hope in the single-aisle category that accounts for most new aircraft orders. It has tough competition in Airbus's A320neo, also an older model with new engines and other options.

The MAX's first flight comes just days before the 48th anniversary of the first 737 commercial flight, by Lufthansa in February, 1968. The airlines with the most 737s are Southwest, Ryanair, United and American.
